About

We've been on Portland roofs since 2017.

Rodrigo spent years on other crews, taking photos of rotten wood. That habit became our inspection.

Why the attic

Why we go into the attic

For years, Rodrigo's job on someone else's crew was to photograph the rot before it got covered. He watched companies nail metal over soft wood. He watched a company sell 25 sheets of plywood when 10 were bad, and the homeowner had already paid for 25.

So when he started Black Diamond, the camera came with him. On every roof, he photographs the jack pipes, the vents, the measurements. Then he goes into the attic with a light and films what he finds. The photos go out with the estimate.

This year a Portland-area homeowner told him she'd paid for roof maintenance every year for years, and nobody had ever gone into her attic or told her what he'd just told her. That's the whole reason.

How we work

Eight rules we don't bend.

In Rodrigo's words.

  • Honesty first.

“I like to be honest with customers.” We explain the materials, the grades and the trade-offs so you're satisfied with what you paid for.

  • Educate, don't push.

“Sometimes they think all shoes are the same because they're all for walking. But some are more comfortable than others.”

  • Replace what's rotten.

We don't cover soft wood with metal. We take it out.

  • Charge for what we replace.

You pay for the sheets that were bad, not for a guess.

  • Sell the system, not the shingle.

“We're not going to put a roof on you. We're going to put a roofing system on you.”

  • Follow your goal, not the sale.

“Do you want this house long-term, or are you selling it?” We recommend for your answer, not ours.

  • Tell the truth about the warranty.

“Fifty years, yes, but it's prorated. The more years pass, the smaller your warranty gets.” We say that before you sign.

  • Communicate.

It's the thing customers care about most, and the thing we work hardest to get right.

Credentials

How to check us

Don't take our word for any of this. Look it up.

  • Oregon CCB #219931

Search the Oregon Construction Contractors Board. You'll see the license, the bond, and any complaints.

  • GAF Certified

Residential and commercial. GAF checks a contractor's license and insurance before it puts its name next to theirs.

  • CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster

CertainTeed's credential for shingle installers. Residential and commercial.

  • Commercial certification: GAF and Mule-Hide

You can't get certified for commercial work without installing a lot of squares first. Not just anyone qualifies. Most residential roofers in this market never do.

Certification is not a sticker. It is volume installed, verified by the manufacturer.

The crew

Red shirts, so you can count us from the street.

Red shirts and red caps, so you can see everyone on the roof from the street. Harnesses on the roof. That's a safety choice, not a fashion one.

People who trained on these crews now run their own roofing companies. Eleven of them, at last count. We're proud of that, and we still compete with them.

  • Boom truck lifting material to a roof
Material goes up by boom, not through your yard.

Recent roofs

Roofs we finished. Not stock photos.

Every house here is one of ours. Look at the ridge, the pipe boots and the valleys. Then look for the same things in anyone else's photos.
